Information
On the tranquil edge of Gunung Leuser National Park in Langkat Regency lies Tangkahan, often called North Sumatra’s hidden paradise. Tangkahan offers the perfect blend of nature conservation and adventure, renowned for its successful transformation from a deforested area into a thriving community-based ecotourism destination that protects tropical forests.
Visitors can interact with Sumatran elephants and witness the work of the Conservation Response Unit (CRU)—a team that uses trained elephants to patrol the forest and prevent illegal logging. Elephant activities include bathing sessions in the Batang or Buluh rivers, a unique chance to connect with one of the world’s largest land animals. These sessions are available in the morning or afternoon. Other experiences include feeding the elephants or participating in a jungle patrol, following these magnificent creatures through the forest while learning about conservation.
Surrounded by dense rainforest and nourished by two crystal-clear rivers, Tangkahan offers an ideal setting for adventure. Thrill-seekers can enjoy off-roading or river rafting in rubber boats, combining adrenaline-pumping action with breathtaking tropical scenery.
For those who love exploration, jungle trekking through the Leuser Mountains provides the chance to spot wildlife, including orangutans, monkeys, elephants, and a wide variety of birds. After trekking, visitors can unwind in the area’s natural hot springs and waterfalls, or relax in natural riverbank pools, offering a perfect retreat amid lush surroundings.
Tangkahan is more than a destination—it’s an immersive experience in conservation, adventure, and the stunning beauty of North Sumatra’s rainforest.

Notes
No air conditioner, it is best for you to rest, if the next day you are going to do jungle tracking. Net bed you are going to see the variety of insects after the night comes so you have to get protected by that while you are sleeping. No enough internet if it really needs it you can move to another area Down the hill and a bit far beetween Village and palm oil farming. Try to avoid insects without feeling disturbed by them.
