Information
Bukit Lawang—“Bukit” means hills, and “Lawang” means door—is a quiet village located at the headwaters of the river, where young people gather to sing. “Jungle track, jungle track in Bukit Lawang, see the monkeys, see the birds, see the orangutans.”
Bukit Lawang is one of the last strongholds for orangutans and plays a crucial role in global biodiversity conservation. Our expedition program offers visitors the opportunity to experience Bukit Lawang through outdoor activities, from enjoying the roar of the river to spending a night in the forest.
As part of global conservation efforts, international tourism directly supports programs to protect Sumatran orangutans. The extinction of any species—especially intelligent primates like orangutans—represents an irreplaceable genetic and moral loss for the entire planet.
The tropical rainforest of Bukit Lawang, one of the largest in Southeast Asia, serves as a vital carbon sink. Preserving it is essential in the global fight against climate change and rising atmospheric temperatures. This demonstrates that environmental and nature conservation can provide more sustainable and profitable income compared to clearing forests for palm oil plantations or illegal logging.
The arrival of international tourists also creates employment opportunities for local communities, including guides, photographers, and lodging staff, supporting the local economy. Furthermore, Bukit Lawang serves as an educational center where visitors can learn about the importance of conservation, the threats of deforestation, and wildlife protection efforts, spreading awareness of global environmental stewardship.
Visiting Bukit Lawang is not only a personal journey but also a meaningful contribution to protecting one of the world’s most important natural heritage sites and ensuring the survival of the Sumatran orangutan.

Notes
No air conditioner, it is best for you to rest, if the next day you are going to do jungle tracking. Net bed you are going to see the variety of insects after the night comes so you have to get protected by that while you are sleeping. No enough internet if it really needs it you can move to another area Down the hill and a bit far beetween Village and palm oil farming. Try to avoid insects without feeling disturbed by them.
